James Clyburn: 'No interest' in backing down - John Bresnahan - POLITICO.com
Rep. James Clyburn, battling with Rep. Steny Hoyer for the minority whip position in the next Congress, has “no interest” in “stepping down” to a lower leadership post.
The South Carolina Democrat also believes there are as many as 50 Democrats who remain undecided on whether to support him or Hoyer, meaning that the race is still wide open.
Clyburn also won’t entertain the notion of making any deal with Hoyer and Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California — at least until it is clear that he doesn’t have the votes to win.
“I wouldn’t be making calls or talking to these members if I didn’t think I could win,” Clyburn told POLITICO in an interview on Tuesday.
According to Clyburn, a winning margin in the whip race “has not been reached by either one of us.”
Sources close to Hoyer have said the Maryland lawmaker already has the votes to win, despite formally announcing his candidacy for the post only on Monday.
Clyburn, the top-ranking African-American leader in Congress, also said his race has “become a mission” for the Congressional Black Caucus. The South Carolina Democrat said CBC members are telling him “that your race is our race.”
The veteran lawmaker suggested other Democratic leaders took CBC support for granted during tough legislative fights, and he said that fellow black lawmakers want to make sure that no longer happens.
“Every time there’s to be a deal, the short end of the stick ends up with the CBC,” Clyburn said.

"More food stamps? Or more paychecks?" Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, one of the Republican Party's best rabble rousers, suggests that's how the GOP should couch the national policy debate in the final four weeks before this November's midterm elections.
According to news website Politico, Gingrich sent a memo to GOP candidates Tuesday suggesting that they frame the election as a "vivid contrast" between the policies of food stamps vs. jobs. In the memo, he links to this recent news of the record 41.3 million Americans receiving federal food aid, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
The Republicans should craft a "closing argument" this way, writes Gingrich: "This year, the House Republican's Pledge to America has set the stage for a powerful, symbolic closing argument for candidates seeking to unseat the left-wing, big spending, job killing Democrats: paychecks versus food stamps."
And so one of the party's loudest voices creates a new Republican agenda: demonizing the poor.

Gingrich is a despicable man. his politics like his personal behavior are not based in ignorance. No he knows better. His policies are based upon his lack of a moral center in his life. He will do anything, say anything to get ahead. Remember this is a man who divorced his wife while she was dying of cancer. Do not take anything this man say seriously.

When President Barack Obama turned the battle over a planned New York Islamic center into a national debate over religious freedom, he unwittingly allied himself and his party with an ill-planned, long-shot development project described by one of its most prominent allies as “amateur hour.”
The efforts to launch the $100 million Cordoba House (now dubbed Park51) two blocks north of the World Trade Center site have been an uphill battle from the start, and not just because of controversy. And even as the “Ground Zero Mosque” emerges as a hotly debated national symbol, New York government officials and real estate insiders are privately questioning whether the project has much chance of coming to fruition.
The Cordoba Initiative hasn’t begun fundraising yet for its $100 million goal. The group’s latest fundraising report with the State Attorney General’s office, from 2008, shows exactly $18,255 – not enough even for a down payment on the half of the site the group has yet to purchase.
The group also lacks even the most basic real estate essentials: no blueprint, architect, lobbyist or engineer — and now operates amid crushing negative publicity. The developers didn't line up advance support for the project from other religious leaders in the city, who could have risen to their defense with the press.
The group’s spokesman, Oz Sultan, wouldn’t rule out developing the site with foreign money in an interview with POLITICO – but said the project’s goal is to rely on domestic funds. Currently, they have none of either.
“They are in the process of hiring an architect — but here’s the thing, you’re not going to get the architect or the engineer because they don’t want to be involved in this,” Sultan, the new media consultant hired to handle some of the project’s imaging — mostly via Twitter — told POLITICO.

"An unrepentant Andrew Breitbart told POLITICO on Thursday that the Obama administration and its allies have manufactured a controversy over the video he posted of Shirley Sherrod’s speech to the NAACP as part of an orchestrated effort to take him down.
“I am public enemy No. 1 or 2 to the Democratic Party, the progressive movement and the Obama administration based upon the successes my journalism has had,” Breitbart said in a telephone interview late Thursday morning as he headed to the airport for what he said was a long-planned, three-day vacation.
Breitbart asserted that liberal media outlets are shifting the focus to the misleading excerpting in the videos he posted— as well as his erroneous statement about the context of the footage to divert attention from what he asserts is a double standard on racist behavior exposed by the video, which he released Monday to push back against a recently passed NAACP resolution expressing concern about “racist elements” in the tea party movement." This response by Breitbart to his out right lies, in addition to deceptive editing, of the Sherrod video is reprehensible and should be denounced by the conservative movement. We will see how they respond.
